ABOUT
Kate’s studio is a creative oasis surrounded by wide stretches of farmland — a setting that offers both physical and mental openness essential to her practice. Within this quiet expanse, she reflects on the parallels between the natural world and human experience.
From an actively creative childhood through to fashion design after school and many subsequent professions throughout her career, a common thread of colour and design is evident. Kate took up painting full time in 2017 and was invited to join Greenhouse Interiors in 2019 which helped to shape her career. She has had several solo exhibitions, and group shows and enters various competitions throughout the year. Kate is now represented by Wentworth Galleries in Sydney and Brisbane, and her pieces are widely collected and enjoyed in many homes across Australia and abroad.
Kate’s monthly newsletter is a joyful infusion of colour and the place to be if you want access to new work first or following her journey on Instagram is a fascinating insight into the life of a rural artist.
Through intuitive exploration of visual memory, Kate creates semi-abstract interpretations of organic forms. She is particularly drawn to fungi and cacti — their sculptural shapes, whimsical individuality, and intricate networks mirror the ways humans exist, unique yet interdependent, thriving through community and connection.
Her process begins with observation and absorption. She captures images and sketches to build a kind of muscle memory around the forms. As she simplifies compositions, Kate allows intuition to guide the work, painting from memory and impression so that each piece develops its own rhythm and essence.
Working on a large scale keeps her gestures free and expressive, sustaining the physical joy of making. She layers oil pastels with acrylics mixed with mediums for gloss and transparency, often finishing with the luminous depth of oil sticks.
Colour lies at the heart of Kate’s practice. She uses it to heighten emotional resonance and reveal the beauty inherent in both nature and human connection. Through each work, Kate seeks to evoke the playful curiosity of childhood — a space where wonder, community, and creativity intertwine.
